Description
Partnerships and alliances are decisive for success in commercial aviation. The auditing of code-share partners is a recognized instrument for documenting operational safety standards. Previously, airlines audited their alliance partners themselves according to their individual requirements – a time-consuming, costly solution.

Now, the IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) program does away with multiple audits and heterogeneous standards. IOSA forms the basis of the world's first uniform audit standard and permits the joint use of audit reports by airlines, regulatory authorities, and other interested parties (audit sharing). IATA-accredited audit organizations with specially trained IOSA auditors perform audits according to a standard procedure applied worldwide. Audit results are thus comparable and the number of redundant audits reduced, allowing airlines to reduce their quality-related costs and deploy their resources more productively.

The audit focuses on the entire management system, from flight operations to operational security, ground handling, and maintenance. The airline is allowed up to 12 months to implement suitable corrective measures. Consequently, the on-site audit does not mark the end of the procedure, and an airline cannot simply fail an IOSA audit. The airline is added to the registry once all findings have been satisfactorily completed. The registry entry may then be viewed by potential partners as a decision-making aid with the permission of the audited airline.
